Challenge Painting #212 Scott Litherland's Dusty a Working Mustang

Dusty and Scott Litherland:
Monday October 17th painting

"Hide and Seek"
Scott Litherland and Dusty
5 by 7 inches Watercolor
by LindaLMartinArtist
SOLD
Scott Litherland almost has a horse lover's dream in working with the 135 horses, burros and mules at Alder Hill Farm Rescue.  It is an amazing Labor of Love to to save, rehabilitate and sustain so many equines. Scott's passion for the animals sustains and drives him. It also helps to have found a suitable work horse. Dusty was originally one of the rescue mustangs. Even though he is a bit smaller than Scott usually uses in a "ranch" type horse, Dusty is a game worker and enjoys helping to wrangle the 50 plus premarin babies  and other horses in residence on the two Alder Hill Farm Rescue sites.

About Dusty in Scott's own words:

"Now a bit of info on my boy Dusty...he is a 96 model chestnut mustang from HMA #CA0243 New Raven Dale CA..he was captured December 14, 2000 as a 4 year old..he was shipped to Litchfield holding pens til approx 3 months later  then on to AWY holding facility...where he sat idle til his friendly attitude got him shipped to Canon City CO at the prison training where he was placed under saddle...

After completing his training he went to his first adoption event in Cross Plains TN where a person in GA adopted him....fast forward til Id say 2009 when Christine with her own small private rescue saved his butt... In the early part of this year he ended up in my hands!!! HE WILL REMAIN WITH ME TILL ONE OF US DIES!!!WHICH ON BOTH OF OUR BEHALF WE HOPE TO BE A LONG LONG TIME FROM NOW!! And as  you stated, he isnt quite the size I like to work from...but his heart and strength in the desire for a chase makes him a 16 hand gelding in both our minds!!"

The premarin babies, mostly all Appaloosas, are now 4 year olds. They are now grown up enough to begin their natural training education under Scott's direction. Dusty, with his early life as part of a wild herd, understands how to firmly deal with some what wayward young horses and thrives on the team work with Scott as his lead partner,  when it comes to rounding up the "babies" or moving them from pasture to pasture.

Challenge Painting #210 Smoke - Apache Mustang

Karin Hauenstein is an advid trail-rider, only when she rides the trails she goes out for 2 or more months at a time and generally brings all her provisions on the backs of 2 or 3 pack animals. While on one of these trips and visiting a National Park in Arizona she came upon this beautiful light buckskin bachelor stallion.

Photo Reference provided by Karin Hauenstein

Here is the story in her own words:

"Smoke is an "American Mustang" he is a descendant of the Spanish horses of Cortez that were bred by the Apache Indians in the White Mountains of AZ. He came from an area near Heber, AZ in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest very near the ...geographical feature Buckskin Wash on the topo map. He was kicked out to me from a herd of 18 horses, 16 mares and one solid Chestnut Stallion. 6 of the mares in Smoke's herd look exactly the same as him, but they have very defined buckskin to white highlights in their manes and tails. I saw them half a dozen times grazing together within a mile of our camp. I hope they are still there and have multiplied.

Smoke is the sweetest animal I have ever known. He came from such fear of humans to absolutely loving them. Especially children. Horses have such a connection to peoples auras. Children, especially young children have those innocent energies, he is drawn to them. ..  He was extremely calm around everyone, otherwise I would have had him hooked up. Smoke must have met over 100 people last weekend. He loves it and the people got a real treat. "

To read about the adventure and how Smoke came to be Karin's you can read the entire story and see the photography on her facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/#!/notes/karin-hauenstein/smoke-apache-mustang/234245113260442

Challenge Painting #208 Crystal Irwin's Rosie

"Rosie"
5 by 5 inch Watercolor
by LindaLMartin
$35.00
With a kind eye and a willing attitude there is nothing not to like about Crystal Irwin's  first adopted mustang Rosie. However the story is as much about Crystal as it is her horse. She is a full time wife and mom with a dream to help Mustangs. She plans to do it one horse at a time. I will let her tell the rest of the story and update this later, but for right now I heard that she was under the weather and I hope this little portrait of her special girl will raise her spirits and give her a little joy. Blessings Crystal.

Challenge Painting #207 Lona Patton's Iktomi, rescued mustang in Wymoming

This painting was completed on October 7th 2011
"Iktomi"
5 by 5 inch Watercolor
by LindaLMartinArtist
$35.00
In Lona Patton's own words from her Facebook Album:
"Iktomi, BLM 05827201 (Shaved his neck and wet it, to discover his freezebrand)

Iktomi where he was discovered
abandoned by the Real estate person.
The shelter didn't even have a roof.
On July 8, 2011, I received a phone call from Susan Thomas, wife of the late Craig Thomas. And founder of the Thomas Foundation. She had learned of an abandoned mustang in need, and after calling Reach 4 A Star Therapeutic Riding Academy, was given my name and number to see if I could help.
My daughter & I went to see him and assess the situation, thinking we just needed to know more about him in order to locate a proper Equine Rescue who could take him.
When we got out to where he was though, he had no food or water, nor any available to even give him, he had been abandoned. Upon further investigation, we discovered he was still an intact stallion, of which no rescue we knew of would take.
At my home, I have a BLM approved corral that could hold a stallion, so although we were already at full capacity, we brought him home.
His hooves were long and uncared for, so we got him trimmed, got him inoculated against horse diseases, had him gelded, and my daughter is now working on his training.

This Photo of Lona's daughter and Iktomi  was taken 2 weeks after
Iktomi's rescue. He is truly an amazing horse worthy of his
opportunity to Shine.

He is slowly gaining weight and improving and should make a fantastic saddle horse when his training is complete."

When Deb Moore returned home after picking up several mares from the Burns Adoption facility in Oregon on July1,2011 one of the horses was heavy in foal. On July 4th a little after 1am the varnished roan appaloosa mare, Deb named Isis, delivered a beautiful Chestnut filly with snow flake spots across her hind quarters.  Deb's farm is located in Washington State. For many years she has been a quarterhorse breeder but in recent years has turned her attention toward the adoption and training of mustangs.

Challenge Painting #204 Chief of Warm Springs HMA; a Happy Mustang

"Chief"
5 by 5 inches Watercolor
by LindaLMartinArtist
$35.00
I decided to paint Chief tonight, from his photo as a young stallion just brought into the corrals at Burns, Oregon. The reference photo was taken just prior to his adoption. He was rounded up from Warm Springs HMA and makes his life now with horsewoman Andi Harmon as a working Ranch Horse.
Chief as a young horse
at the BLM Corrals of Burns, OR
Before His adoption.

Chief today as a working Mustang
Ranch Horse. He really does Look
Like a happy Mustang!
Chief is a genetic historic traditional appaloosa but is still a wild horse. I am told that many horses from Warm Springs HMA have these traditional Appaloosa characteristics including a naturally sparse tail, stocky build, wispy mane and splashy markings of dots and spots. Chief also carries the roaning gene and as he has gotten older he also has changed to the lighter roan coloring.

Special thanks to Andi Harmon and Darling from the Sisters of the Steens for the use of the Photography. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of this painting will go to Mustang U in Washington State.
